The ISO 14001 implementation process
Implementing an EMS can become very complicated without any help from outside. It is therefore recommended to obtain support from an external party. This way you know that you are going in the right direction comfort the ISO 14001 standard and that you will pass the certification audit! The implementation process consists of 6 phases:
Phase 1: Context analysis
An ISO 14001 implementation starts in the first phase with determining the context of the organization. This includes an area of application, required resources for processes, responsibilities and authorities, internal and external communication, description of the risk framework, environmental impact of the organization, meeting the wishes and expectations of stakeholders and compliance with environmental legal requirements.
Phase 2: core activities
All core processes of the organization’s services and/or products that have impact on the environment should be determined.
Phase 3: EMS implementation
The topics are elaborated into procedures, forms, instructions, etc. Examples of documents are job descriptions, instructions for working with hazardous materials, environmental impact assessment, complaints procedures, etc. Documents that have been elaborated are published in a handbook.
Phase 4: Evaluation
The management review is your annual environmental plan in which several important aspects of the environmental system (inputs & outputs) are evaluated by top management. It could be your energy consumption, waste recycling, transport etc. It is a look back on the past year and a look ahead to the coming year(s).
Phase 5: Internal audit
As a permanent and mandatory part of a certifiable environmental management system, an organization must periodically perform an internal audit. An internal audit is an assessment of whether what has been described is still correct and is being properly applied. It is important that you look a little further, namely whether it still makes sense for certain things to be done in that way. Here it is also important that an external will carry it out. Someone who can perform this audit for the organization properly and in a professional sense. At the end, you can’t audit yourself, right?!
